Professor of Counseling and Educational Development (CED) in the School of Education for 28 years, 1976-2004.

Professor of curriculum and instruction(math education) in the School of Education from 1987 to 2003.

Dr. Sherri R. Forrester

Dr. Forrester was a faculty member of the Chemistry Dept. faculty from 1962-1992.


Dr. Fred Chappell
May 28, 1936-January 4, 2024
Professor of English at UNCG for 40 years, acclaimed author and poet, Chappell was also the Poet Laureate of North Carolina from 1997-2002.


Dr. Robert Rosthal
October 16, 1923-December 2, 2023
Dr. Rosthal taught Philosophy at the Woman’s College of the Univ of North Carolina and UNCG from 1961 to 1992.


Dr. Gay Cheney
Died November 28, 2023
Dr. Cheney was a UNC Greensboro dance faculty member from 1976 to 1996, and head of the Dance Department from 1978 to 1982.


Dr. Kimberlianne Podlas
Died November 21, 2023
Dr. Podlas was a professor since 2004 and Head of Media Studies Department since 2016.


Dr. Lloyd Bond
November 17, 1941-September 27, 2023
Dr. Bond taught in the Department of Education Research Methodology from 1988-2002. He also provided groundbreaking technical work for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for 30 years. His last full-time position prior to retirement was as a Senior Scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in Stanford, CA.
A memorial / celebration of life event will be held in the spring of 2024 in Greensboro, NC, with details provided closer to the event date.


Dr. Mark Smith-Soto
May 29, 1948-October 28, 2023
Professor of Romance Languages from 1975-2014, Department Head from 1986-994, and recipient of the UNCG Senior Alumni Teaching Excellence Award. He was also the director of the UNCG Center for Creative Writing in the Art, editor of the International Poetry Review, and winner of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry.

Graduate of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNCG) and a steadfast supporter of kinesiology and generous donor to UNCG.

Professor in the School of Education.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Twin Lakes Community, Burlington, NC.


Dr. Robert McCluer Calhoon
October 3, 1935 – January 14, 2022
Professor in the Department of History and the Residential College. Recipient in 2008 of North Carolina’s highest honor, The Order of the Longleaf Pine.
Memorial services will be planned for June 2022 in both Valle Crucis and Greensboro, North Carolina. Gifts in Calhoon’s Honor can be made to the Center for New North Carolinians at UNCG.


Martha Glyn Ransley

Librarian emeritus of Jackson Library, where she had served as head of the Reserve Division and later as head of the Circulation Department.


Dr. Kay Lovelace
January 13, 1953 – November 23, 2021
Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Education. Worked at UNCG for over 25 years.


Dr. Walter Henry Beale, III
January 15, 1945-November 12, 2021
Walter moved to Greensboro in 1971 to be an assistant professor of English at UNCG. Awarded full professor in 1984, he served as the Chair of the English Department from 1988-1990, and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1990-2003.


Dr. Kathleen Koestler
October 11, 1937 – October 6, 2021
Taught foreign languages for forty years in the Department of Romance Languages at UNCG. She also earned a BSN in Nursing from UNCG and worked at Cone Hospital and as a volunteer at HealthServe.

Professor in the UNCG School of Music for 28 years from 1976 until 2004.

Virginia “Ginny” Stephens

Ginny was the first director of the UNCG social work program, and an architect of Joint Master of Social Work Program of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and UNCG.
